Hello,
The 11+ and SATs… both sat in Year 6 but both are very different.
What is the same?
There are some things that are similar about the 11+ and the SATs.
Both exams test English and Maths knowledge.
They also look at topics that have been taught throughout primary school (but mainly focusing on KS2).
Both exams will be sat formally and will be marked externally.
So, what’s different?
There are also some differences between the two exams.
Everyone will sit the SATs exams at the end of Year 2 and Year 6 however the 11+ is completely optional.
11+ exams are only used by grammar schools however SATs results could be looked at by any school.
SATs are often used as an assessment of your child’s progress and the school’s teaching - it isn’t a grade that they’ll use much in the future.
The 11+ also tests additional subjects that aren’t taught in schools such as Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning.
The short answer is no, the 11+ and SATs are not the same exams and are not equally important either.
